So I’ve been having panic attacks since I was 15 but through out the years they have become less frequent. Lately I have been getting them frequently though and since I haven’t gotten one in a long time they catch me by surprise and I get scared and end up making the panic attack worst. What can I do to control them? At the moment I have a panic attack that is building up and I don’t want it to get worst because I begin to get scared of even leaving my house because I’m afraid of getting them somewhere else. So help please? How do I control them? I don’t want to take medication for it since when I first started getting panic attacks my doctor put me on medication and I began to get addicted. So help please.

Medication has come a long way in the last few years. I am on a trifecta of medication for my mood swings and panic attacks. I suggest councelling and medical intervention.

If I can sit down and close my eyes and regulate my breathing I can be okay. A lot of times I will visualize a quiet place that I love. Mine is next to a stream that is along the North Shore of Superior.

know your triggers & try to avoid them. i know i take meds & it sucks but sometimes if its bad it could help. also i would suggest therapy that helped me a lot.

I used to get panic attacks so I went to the doctor who said that the worst thing that could happen is i’d pass out. The prospect of that just didn’t seem that bad so I stopped having them.

I think that the fear of the panic attack is what makes them worse and worse but if you accept they’re really no big deal then the symptom and the causes go away all in one.

Before that, I was able to control them using ‘rescue remedy’. Otherwise, singing really helps as it regulates your breathing and stops you from hyperventilating.

    Hi there,
I’m sure you already know this but sporadic panic attacks, when untreated, can escalate into what is known as panic disorder when one has frequent attacks, is constantly in a state of fear and anxiety about having an attack and changes behavior because of the attacks . This is unfortunately also associated with agoraphobia (also known as a fear of open spaces); actually a complication of panic disorder when one fears having an attack in an uncontrolled public environment.

From what you’ve explained, I sense that you are already exhibiting the anticipatory panic and phobic avoidance of certain places (such as the outdoors) – I think you’re panic attacks are starting to escalate.

That was the bad news. The GREAT news is that regardless of the frequency and the cause, panic attacks are treatable – you can reduce your symptoms and begin to regain control of your life. Speaking from personal experience here.

What I found particularly useful was understanding that the symptoms (as real as they may seem) are not associated with any real or potential damage to my body. Even though I felt like I was having a heart attack, I realized that nothing truly disastrous was going to happen and the entire experience became less terrifying. Its about examining your fears in a more realistic light, becoming less afraid of all the stuff that’s going on in your body and taking control of what you are feeling.

So try learn a bit more about your panic symptoms – because the more you understand about the, the less scary the symptoms are.

You’d said that you didn’t want to use medication. Sometimes it may be necessary, in conjunction with other treatments to help control symptoms and address underlying fears. It shouldn’t be used on its own.

Be strong and postive – you can do it!
