I have been stuck in home for 5 years. I take Effexor, Xanax, and Seroquel. I use breathing techniques, chamomile tea, and flushing my face with cold water! I would like to know if anyone has any other suggestions for preventing attacks in my own home or to help stop them when it happens?

I am attempting to go on social security disability, and am awaiting a hearing w/ a judge. I have a separate chronic medical problem, which is the main cheese, but since first applying, I also experience very frequent and severe panic attacks and have intense fear of leaving home (agoraphobia). My adjectives frequent/severe/intense are not exaggerations. I do not really believe in psychologists but I started seeing someone to help my case. I have discovered they are an LCSW, not a PhD…they are a licensed social worker. I thought social workers were for people in bad situations, marital, etc. I can’t believe they put me with a damn social worker for this? She acts just like I thought a psychologist would though. I dunno, she’s more than enthusiastic about helping me with my disability case, but will a judge even listen to an LCSW. Also, is the LCSW even really qualified to give therapy to someone like me? I have no situational issues with family, etc.

Tried very low doses of Valerian, took away anxiety, but still had a panic attack. 1 day of Zoloft only 12.5 mg = VERY jittery, couldn’t sleep, shocks and shaking up and down my legs and arms and head all day, EXTREMELY hungry all the time, full body muscle pain, feel just like I had a few espressos too, and a quick VERY intense sadness, which I had NEVER had, I am a VERY happy person, cautious and careful, but HAPPY, so, I am thinking,increasing Valerian from 18 drops once to 28 drops three times a day maybe, or Kava, ANY alternative for STRONG panic attacks. I only have them in specific situations: trying to walk down the stairs once i can’t see the front door, once the elevator door closes, and somewhat when in traffic, ESPECIALLY the highway, whenever basically outside. Anyone one know an alternative remedy that works quickly as I have to get outside for an important/serious doctor appointment for an unrelated physical health issue that must be treated, and the panic is much worse now since I had an atack on the road recently. I don’t need to be alert as someone will drive me, so alertness is not a factor, just getting outside to the doctors without panic. Zoloft was SO SO SO incredibly bad, and i cant get outside again easily to get some other prescription, so I suppose I am limited to natural / alternatives which a family member can easily buy. So, Valerian, Kava? What else, approximate doses.

I think I have all three of those. Also my symptoms that I get with my panic attacks (or what I believe to be one) aren’t listed in anything I’ve read (i have stomachache, nausea which is listed as well as extreme terror, but then with the stomachache i get cramps and have to go #2…. I know, gross but yeah)…. But anyways, what do I do? I’m too scared to tell my parents because I’m worried what they’ll say or that they won’t take me seriously. I’m 20 btw. I’d say more about why I think I have all three, but I won’t bore you.
oh i also had heaviness in my chest and pain…. i think i had a panic attack earlier :(
Also, I’ve been dealing with this for about 4 years (panic attacks), but it’s gotten a lot worse the past 5 months, and I believe it’s from when I went to Germany but came home early (after 2 weeks, but was suppose to stay 4 months) because I got sick and couldn’t stop crying….

I am having a serious problem with agoraphobia. Therapy has thusfar not helped (have seen 3 so far for 6-8 months apiece). I am frustrated. I am at my wits end. I am a confident, intelligent, outspoken person who wants to be successful and agoraphobia & anxiety attacks (which are very visible to others) are controlling my life.
I had two traumatic experiences in one year about 4 years ago and my problems seem to have spiraled from there. It’s incredibly frustrating because I had to quit my jobs. I dropped out of school. I have many family members/friends who make me feel guilty about these things (and I do, and depressed, frustrated, hopeless at times, miserable, the works) largely because they cannot comprehend why I am having such a problem.

So my question is, is there anyone else out there who has or had similar issues as my own who has regained control of their life?
I am already familiar with standard therapy procedures regarding anxiety attacks and so far haven’t found much success at all. Things are getting worse and not better.
So anyone out there who knows of a support group or a cutting edge research or a method that has worked for them?

I really need some help.

PostHeaderIcon I developed agoraphobia with panic attacks and my therapist recommended zoloft. but I am afraid of it! help!?

I am afraid of taking these drugs that alter the brain chemistry! I mean if i can do breathing exercises and meditation and my anxiety goes away, why do I have to put myself throught this? I suppose the answer is that i can control my panic attacks but the agoraphobia still remains…
I wonder if i take all the willpower i have and try to break through my agoraphobia, will that restore me to normalcy? I am afraid of side effects and withdrawal symptoms. I’ve taken it for a few days and it makes me hyper i think. the therapist said to take some tranquiller for that but i think this is crap; if i take so much drugs, it’s ridiculous!
on the other hand, what if i am stuck with agoraphobia for the rest of my life?
what do you say people (with zoloft experience)?
anyway, is this the only way to get over this or are there any alternative ways to conquer this?
ps. yes, the few days I’ve taken zoloft i did made me a little hyper (i’m afraid of more panic attacks) but in a way blissful.

I had it when I was younger and it somehow became managable in my early twenties. I am 38 now and it has come back, I will have treatment this time and was wondering how it is treated and how long it will take to respond to it. I was diagnosed with ptsd about 10 yrs. ago and recently was diagnosed with the agoraphobia also social phobia, panic disorder and anxiety disorder. Is all of this just different aspects of the ptsd? Please help, this is horrible and lonely, if you have experienced this I would like to hear from you. Thanks.

I’ve always had a kind of claustrophobia – i can’t stand locked doors, and i can’t stand ‘untrustworthy’ doors to be shut while i’m present.
I know it sounds silly, it may be irrational.
I’ve researched agoraphobia and panic attacks, the symptoms of those are what i have had recently. I clam up, feel nausea, can’t breath properly, sweat a lot more, feel chest pains, stomach pains. It is generally when i am in a social situation such as, a strange boy talking to me, i feel trapped like i can’t get out, like i’m going to die. It last between 10 minutes and 1 hour.
This too sounds silly.
My dad suffers from depression and used to have panic attacks, he has had a break down. Some say it’s hereditary. It’s very scary, i’m only just 15. I’m scared to go out now.
Does this sound like agoraphobia? Are they panic attacks? Is it linked to claustrophobia? Is it linked to my father?

I have agoraphobia and anxiety, and it is very hard for me to go out and exercise or join the gym. Is there anyway that I can lose weight then in the house. All I have are light weights. So, is there anyway to lose weight. Or could I lose weight walking around my park for an hour four times a week?
