i am 36yrs of age. Until three years ago i never used to have anxiety or panic attack. the situation seems to be getting out of hand cos now it affects my public speaking and annoyingly my writting. (i get so nervousand jittery when somebody is watching me write that my hands get frozen and cant even write my name without great effort. my hand will shake and my handwriting will be clumsy. And the kind of job irequires me to write all the time while a customer sits beside or opposite me.

i have tried deep breathing –sometimes its works but sometimes when i am already highly charged (with my heart beat pumping fast) it doesnt work.

i actually need a psycological technigue or help to overcome this. Cos i have come to realise that my thought and emotional state affects the degree of my anxiety. For example i tend to be less nervous or nervous-free ( as such i write well, speak publicly well) when i am angry or in a sad mood. ie anger, annoyance, sad event calms my nerves.

so pls what can i do to combact anxiety, always remain calm-no matter i.e be unshakable by events/situations, and in summary become fearless and worry-free. Thanks

I have been studying Islam for a year now and would like to go to my local mosque, but I have a social phobia disorder. This is an anxiety disorder that has developed due to a string of incidents of trauma and victimization. Truth is, I have never liked crowds, but the social phobia disorder makes it impossible for me to go someplace where I do not know people without severe discomfort in the form of extreme nervousness and physical pain. It can be hard to breathe as well. I am at risk of a brain chemistry spike that will upset my equilibrium and cause me to stumble (which means I could fall, I could fall into other people, I could fall into objects and knock them over, maybe breaking some of them), I could have a panic attack that mimics heart attack or other severe symptoms, I could even faint.

Being a new Muslim, I do not yet know the ways of the mosque, the procedures to follow and where things are, and I am afraid of being judged for being different because this has been my experience in other places. Also, I have sent several requests to the mosque through its website explaining I have this disorder and asking for outreach from the mosque, but there is no answer which further makes me fear that I will be rejected, that it is a closed and hostile community not interested in welcoming new members or at least not any with disabilities. I would really like to go to the mosque though and so I am in agony right now trying to cope with my disorder because if I think about going there without knowing anyone, without anyone to show me around or introduce me to other people, the anxiety and its symptoms hit me.

Does anyone in this forum know any Muslims in Spokane, Washington USA? I am looking for someone to help me, just one Muslim brother who will do outreach with me and take me to the mosque and teach me the rules and procedures there and show me where things are and introduce me to others. I don’t know what else to do.
The answers so far don’t match the question. I can’t go to the mosque to meet any brothers there because of the disorder, that is what I just explained. I need someone to do outreach. There is a place on the website to request outreach and another to “contact us,” I have sent requests through both. I have sent several messages to the mosque with my email and telephone number over the course of several days, over a week now and there is no answer. Once I went to the old mosque, the doors were locked, but I heard someone inside, so I knocked and waited and knocked and waited and after 15 minutes of being ignored and shunned, I gave up.
It is the only mosque near me.
I do pray at home, that is not the issue. I want to go to the mosque but I need help from another Muslim because I have a disability. I am working to overcome it, that is why I want to go to the mosque, but you don’t overcome it by pretending it doesn’t exist and setting yourself up for failure. Muslims are supposed to help one another, but the mosque does not seem interested to help a Muslim with disabilities or it does not want new members? I am perplexed at the time I knocked and the person inside did not open the door to greet me and my daughter. I am perplexed why the mosque has not answered my request for assistance, and that would be assistance in helping me overcome the disorder. You don’t toss a person who does not know how to swim into a swimming pool and command, “swim” and expect them to be able to swim do you? Assitance is needed to overcome the disorder. Muslims are supposed to help one another and answer each others’ calls for help.

Master, thanks for changing your answer, but the advice doesn’t work. A person with social phobia disorder doesn’t go to a crowded place and approach strangers who will have reasons to be suspicious of the person. Thanks for trying, but the disorder precludes me from going there on my own during a time it will be crowded. I tried to go in between prayer times once and the doors were all locked and no one around in middle of day. It’s a very different kind of mosque, I guess, I don’t know. Another time there was someone inside and I knocked and knocked and they did not answer. I think the Muslims in my town must be different and do not welcome new people or they would answer the door and answer my request for outreach and help a person with disabilities. I have explained several times about the disability to them, but they ignore and do not answer. I am greatly saddened by this. Why the Muslims in my town do not act like these great welcoming Muslims at these other mosques?

I have been suffering from panic attacks for about 10 years now. Medication does not help much. I had a ct scan for another problem about 5 years ago which showed that I was actually missing part of my brain. I can only remember that it was somewhere near the base of the brain. Could there be a relationship between this anomaly and my panic attacks. Please, no guessing.

Please help! Like I said it’ll be 2 1/2 weeks before I can see a doctor.

I hate to sound like one of those people asking questions with a slew of different conditions but unfortunately I’m no exception. Up til 2 years ago I was a happy, energetic, and optimistic person. After experiencing several unfortunate circumstances I suddenly started having panic attacks. I thought it was something that would go away with time but I was mistaken. Now I have them several times a week if not every day. I avoid going out which has led to depression. I exercise, I’ve changed my diet, cut caffeine out completely, but still I feel imprisoned by my condition. Now Ive noticed myself thinking such negative thoughts like I’ll always be this way, theres no hope, and whats the point of living if this is how its going to be. I dont mean to sound emo at all… I dont like how I feel, believe me. I want to change and just “having good thoughts” isnt enough. Have any of you overcome/successfully managed your panic attacks?

He put me on Zoloft which I did not tolerate well at all. He likes me to put input into things, and I would like to have an idea of which antidepressant for my panic attacks would be. He of course would make the final descion, but he does ask my opinion.

PostHeaderIcon Does anybody out there know what causes their panic attacks?

I’ve had them for years now. At first I couldn’t even get on a bus cause I felt “out of control” and each time the bus went round a corner I felt like I was on a roller coaster, you know that weird feeling in your chest when you go down a steep incline on a coaster, only worse. You should see me on a plane during take off now !! It’s kinda calmed down a bit over the years but even to this day I get panic attacks. It comes in various forms from felling kind of hollow inside, suddenly having to do something like tap my foot or fingers etc to try and knock my self out of it and bring myself “back”. I also sometimes feel like I don’t have a body at times.Most of these symptoms are accompanied with a very VERY fast heart rate, that tingle in the stomach and chest, it’s really hard to explain in words, but if you’ve been through one, you’ll know exactly what I mean. I was actually at a job interview yesterday and took a panic attack, I was pretty lucky that it was a group information session that I took the attack but the real issue was that I had to give an individual presentation straight after,,,, all eyes on me, not good but I survived, just. Thank god the one on one interview isn’t for another week !! Anyway, I’m wondering if anybody has worked out any specific information as to what sets their attacks off. I think everybody will be different, but I’d really like to compare what sets it off in different people. Also, what do you guys do to get over it ? Have you ever had one in a really bad place, i.e. job interview, giving a speech or what ever. Does anybody have any real horror stories that they’d like to share.

I have had panic attacks since June, 2008. Something scary happened. Then more stress happened a few months later and I Started getting them regularly. I tried 2 meds – lexapro and adivan. They scare me and don’t seem to help. I try books and videos. I am feeling much better, but still nervous enough that I don’t do things I enjoy anymore.
